Comment spamming is one of the serious issue most bloggers face. Thousands of auto bots exists online which just posts unwanted comments in the blogs. It becomes a regular job for bloggers to moderate comments before they appear on the article. I am one of the victim of the comment spam. I used Disqus comment system for few days since I started this blog which used to take care of automatically detecting the spam and cleaning them. I never used to moderate any comment but instead I focused on responding to my readers genuine comments. Because of few reasons I have decided not to use Disqus, so disabled Disqus wordpress plugin.
That’s where the problem started. This blog was running on WordPress default comment system for few days. I used to get around 200-300 spam comments per day. Next day itself I realised that and changed my wordpress comment settings to “moderate all comments” so that I can mark spam comments and approve genuine ones. It became hectic job for me to read 200-300 comments per day and mark them as spam. I know there are anti spam solutions available for wordpress and the good one is Akismet. I checked their website and its not free. After doing some research I have decided to move on to Intense Debate commenting system, unfortunately Intense Debate wont fight against spam.
While thinking about solution one of my Facebook friend told me that we can get Akismet API Key for free. WOW, I thanked him and looked into Akismet site again and found a way to get a genuine Key for free. Here is the way to get one for you.
1) Visit Akismet website.
2) Click on Signup for Akismet button
3) Choose Personal Plan
4) Enter your details and then in the right side of signup page you see a slider which says $36/yr. Just move the slider to make it $0/yr
5) You will get a email with the API Key. Enter that key in Akismet settings page in WordPress admin.
6) Your blog is now spam FREE with FREE spam protection.
For personal bloggers this is a best solution to get Akismet key for free. Once you start earning money you may consider paying money to Akismet plugin as they need support to innovate more to protect Internet from spam.
